Green Digital Charter signatories at the 2011 Covenant's ceremony

On 29 November, Sir Richard Leese of Manchester City Council presented the Green Digital Charter to the Covenant of Mayors signatories during the Covenant’s annual ceremony.

As the city that initiated the Green Digital Charter in 2009,Manchesterwas selected to represent the Charter signatories and their commitments to reducing emissions through Information and Communications Technologies.

The Green Digital Charter was presented in the European Parliament’s Hemicycle to over 1100 participants,  including Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, Mercedes Bresso, President of the Committee of the Regions, and European Commissioners Štefan Fϋle (Enlargement and European neighbourhood policy), Janez Potočnik (Environment) and Johannes Hahn (Regional policy).

Sir Leese explained the evolution of the Green Digital Charter, now supported by the NiCE project, and how the cityManchesteris currently implementing their commitments. He also publicly congratulated with the city ofZagrebthat signed the Green Digital Charter on the same day, bringing the number of signatories to 24.

Of the Green Digital Charter signatories, 22 are also committed to the Covenant of Mayors. Sir Leese underlined how the Charter scope is closely linked to the Covenant of Mayors. Both the Green Digital Charter and the Covenant of Mayors support the reduction of CO2 emissions in cities: the Charter focuses specifically on ICTs, while the Covenant addresses energy efficiency more widely.

In the same session of the Covenant of Mayors, the leaders of the GDC signatories Malmo and Genova presented what they have achieved so far.
