Roubaix is the second largest city in the French region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais with about 100,000 inhabitants.
Renowned for art and history, the city remains famous for its architectural heritage and for the economic boom which took place here during the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century, thanks to the textile industry, of which it was the worldwide capital at the beginning of the 20th century. The main French mail order houses were founded here (La Redoute and 3 Suisses), as well as the first shopping malls in France by the Mulliez Family(Auchan).
Roubaix is trying to fight against the difficulties tied to deindustrialization from 1970-1980 by creating new economic industries around ICT sector (Ankama Games / OVH are two leading companies based in Roubaix), its cultural political emphasis (La Piscine Museum, Condition publique, Colisée, la Manufacture ) and a strong student presence (EDHEC Business School, ENSAIT,).
Key goals for the next 10 years are: to pursue economic development with a special emphasis to innovative sectors (retail, e-business, gaming industry) and to sustainable developement (see “Zero Waste” initiative: http://www.roubaixzerodechet.fr/).
