City Introduction

Nuremberg`s urban development was mostly influenced by the city’s foundation in the Middle Ages and industrialization throughout the 19th century. During WWII main parts of the city centre were destroyed and were reconstructed after 1945. Many buildings are under a preservation order which leads to special regulations for building refurbishment. Nuremberg has a 300 km district heating system based on a high efficient combined heat and power plant. In the next years it will be the most important challenge to expand this district heating system (increase of customers, inclusion of cooling based on district heating).

Related Initiatives

The city itself is engaged in the following projects:

  • In 2013 the standard computer operation system will be changed to MS Windows 7 which makes it possible to manage the energy saving settings centrally. If appropriate, additional software implementing further power saving functions will be added;
  • Employees of the city are being guided in energy efficient use of IT-equipment in a number of different ways, e.g. through workshops, instruction sheets and bulletins;
  • Expansion of E-Government will help reduce CO2-emission by minimizing the citizens need to travel to the government offices;
  • When purchasing new monitors and PCs special attention is paid to climatically neutral production, long service life, recyclability and low energy consumption. The thresholds are being continually adjusted to the latest state of technology;
  • Conversion to centralized use of multifunctional printers if practicable;

All measures are being continuously refined.
