City Introduction

Belfast is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland, and the second largest of the island of Ireland. Following a period of troubles in the 1970-1980s, Belfast has undergone a sustained period of calm since the 21st century/ today, Belfast remains a centre for industry, as well as the arts, higher education and business and law. Belfast is still a major port, with commercial and industrial docks, and is served by two airports.

Smart Belfast

The ‘Smart Belfast’ framework is about harnessing new technologies and data science in ways that support local economic growth while also contributing to outcomes for people as set out in the Belfast Agenda.

It seeks to build on Belfast’s growing strenghts in the digital sector to foster an environment in four areas :

  1. A shared understanding of city challenges
  2. An engaged innovator community
  3. Building city data assets
  4. Robust delivery mechanisms

Several demonstrator projects are currently being develop to test ideas and build capacity. Discover them here!

A first ‘Smart Belfast Collaborative Challenge‘ was held in September-November 2017. Aimed at SMEs, the Challenge provided funding and expertise to Northern Ireland companies that want to enhance their competitive edge by working together to address challenges that Belfast and other cities are facing today.
