City Introduction

Bari is the capital city of the province of Bari and of the Apulia region and the second most important economic centre of mainland Southern Italy after Naples, and is well known as a port and university city. The Municipality of Bari has a total population of 347,000 with a density of 2,650 inhabitants/Km2. In order to capitalize the results of the City Environmental and Energy Plan and in compliance with the Metropolitan Area Strategic Plan (Bari 2015), Bari has decided to invest in CO2 reduction programs and to develop itself as an inclusive, innovative and low carbon city.

Bari has committed to achieve a 35% CO2 emissions reduction target by 2020 compared to 2002 (baseline year). This target translates into a total reduction of 383,000 tons of CO2. To achieve this goal the Municipality has defined an operating framework which comprises four vertical and five horizontal program areas with 78 reduction initiatives identified through a stakeholder participation and consultation process. Estimations based on the 78 identified initiatives foresee a 40% cut of CO2 emissions, € 1.8 Billion of investment, and the creation of 15,000 (and more) new jobs supporting the proliferation of low carbon investments and the creation of a real “green thinking”.
