Green and Digital – Future City: Bristol paving the way

During a networking lunch organised by the NiCE project in the European Parliament on 29 November 2011, the leader of Bristol City Council, Barbara Janke, presented the city’s efforts in tackling climate change through information and communication technologies (ICT).

The event offered an ideal opportunity to premiere Bristol’s video, ‘Green and Digital –FutureCity, the Covenant of Mayors in Bristol’. Produced by the Covenant of Mayors in collaboration with the city of Bristol and the local sustainable TV and production company Footprint, the video showcases the city’s concrete achievements towards the Covenant goals.

The city of Bristol, signatory to both the Green Digital Charter and the Covenant of Mayors, hopes to become one of the greenest and smartest cities in Europe.

Bristol was one of the first cities to identify the role of ICT for tacking climate change. Since 2009, the city has implemented a number of projects around ‘smart’ themes. These included mapping the carbon footprint of the business use of ICT in the city, a project which was shortlisted for the European Commission’s ‘Best ICT for Energy Efficiency’ award.

Bristol is fully aware of the importance of engaging in knowledge transfer platforms such as NiCE (Networking intelligent Cities for Energy Efficiency), to exchange experiences with other leading cities across Europe.

In the words of producer Scott Jones, “sustainability is at the heart of what we do, in the office, on location and in the stories we tell on screen. The story of Bristol is exactly the kind of story that we loves to tell – to inform and inspire people about the positive change now taking place.”
